The Haunt

My mind often wanders to a dark and common place.

A place where a prickling dread floods and makes my heart race and gasp for air.

It may happen to you, too.

It happens when someone calls out my name, or I hear someone I don’t recognize cry out.

I am reminded to make myself very small and I am no longer in the room.

I have entered an empty, cold home. One with no furniture and the windows are all shut up tight. A place where light has not entered for a long time. Instead, made musty by littered dust and sprinkles of bane.

My voice echoes as I cry out entering room by room. I am hoping for an answer. But no one comes. I ask aloud, pleading with the hollow remains of home made bone. Please let me not be the only one here. I can’t be the only one who feels this way.

Please let this haunt not only be my burden to bear.
